home-health and safety-wall of remembrance

Wall of Remembrance Project

The Wall of Remembrance was built by the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union in 2006. The CFMEU is the largest trade union in Australia organising building workers. In addition to campaigning for improved pay and conditions of employment, the union has fought long and hard to improve workplace safety.

Unfortunately too many workers have been tragically killed in workplace accidents. Thousands have been injured, maimed and disabled. Many more have been exposed to chemicals, asbestos and have subsequently died. Pedestrians and members of the public have also been killed due to sub-standard site safety.

The Wall of Remembrance has been built in memory of all workers killed and injured at work. The CFMEU acknowledges the assistance of Mt Druitt Workers Club, Saba Bros, Grocon and CBUS in supporting this initiative.

On our Wall of Remembrance are the names of many workers killed in accidents since 1988 in NSW. The names of those injured and killed by disease are too many to record, but we pay our respects to all.  When workers are killed and injured it is not just the victims, who suffer, but their families and friends.

The CFMEU Wall of Remembrance Project also provides free legal assistance and support to widows and families of workers tragically killed on building sites.

The CFMEU calls upon all the families of workers killed and injured to join our campaign for better workplace safety. Good safety legislation is important but workers with rights and strong trade unions are paramount.

Attacking trade unions, restricting union right of entry, abolishing protections for workers from unfair dismissals, only undermines workplace safety. We call upon all in the community to defend strong and independent trade unions that stand up for workers rights and improved safety.
