The CFMEU and other building unions have negotiated with all
major builders and employers a prohibition of work on the
weekend and industry-agreed rostered days off adjacent to public
holidays. This means a quality break from work for six weekends
during the working year.
Unfortunately, a small number of unscrupulous developers and contractors are
refusing to cooperate. In response, legitimate employers who agreed with
increased leisure supported by the building unions are seeking endorsement
of local government.
Specifically,
the proposal is for the prohibition of work for long weekends be included in
all Development Applications (DAs) so that shonky contractors do not get a
competitive advantage. Many municipal councils have already endorsed this
prohibition.
The CFMEU
calls upon the Sydney City Council to endorse our proposal. This will be a
win not just for building workers and their families, but for thousands of
residents who now live in the City of Sydney and adjacent suburbs.
