MEND Rehabilitation

The CFMEU in association with the Master Builders Association established MEND Rehabilitation. Mend is the only rehabilitation provider specialising in the construction industry. Mend is a not-for-profit organisation with a specialised industry focus.

Accredited Provider
When an employee is injured, Mend provides individual case management to help get that person back to work.

Mend is the only construction industry specialist accredited by the WorkCover Authority of NSW.

Mend has occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, rehabilitation counsellors and psychologists with specialist experience in the construction industry available to help.

Specialised Services

Trauma Debriefing
If a worker is exposed to a traumatic event it can cause a psychological response. Trauma debriefing (within 24-48 hours) by a registered psychologist is a process to minimise the effects of such events. This service is usually provided at the worksite.

Psychological Screening Assessment
Performed by registered psychologist to identify barriers to a worker’s return to work (psychosocial yellow flags). Both informal and formal testing is used to identify barriers and provide recommendations to facilitate a worker’s return to work/management of injury.

Chronic Pain Management Counselling Programme
This 6 week programme uses a cognitive behaviour therapy approach to give a worker the skills to manage their pain. The programme is delivered by a registered psychologist in individual sessions. The programme compliments the worker whilst attending a work conditioning programme and is provided in conjunction with the support of the worker’s medical practitioner.

Return to Work Coordinator
MEND’s staff are all trained return to work coordinators. They provide temporary relief services to category 1 employers or provide staff in a locum capacity for employers.

Job Training/Job Seeking Assistance Programme (JT/JSP)
An initial intake assessment confirms the job seekers readiness for the programme. The programme offers two unique levels of job training and/or job seeking and placement. Competitively priced and a strong emphasis on a successful outcome.

Psychological Counselling/Therapy
This is available both at the workplace and at Mend’s offices. It is provided by registered psychologists, to service workers requiring short term counseling.

Driver Screening
This is a cost effective assessment for workers with relatively minor injuries. It reviews their driving ability.

Driver Assessment
A qualified occupational therapist and an RTA accredited driver instructor perform a full assessment of the worker’s driving capacity. This assessment is for workers with more significant injuries.

Some employers and insurance companies try to force workers contrary to the law to use rehabilitation companies of their choice.

MEND is located on Level 1 of the CFMEU Head Office at Lidcombe.

Other offices are located at Glebe and Wollongong.
