Unpaid subcontractors occupy foyer of Potts Point hotel

More than 30 workers and subcontractors have occupied the foyer of the Chifley Hotel in Potts Point in an attempt to recover more than half a million dollars in unpaid wages owed for construction work on a new Chifley Hotel.

Seana Constructions, who are building the $17 million dollar four and a half star Chifley Hotel overlooking the Eastern Creek Raceway, have failed to pay more than a dozen subcontractors who have completed work on the site, threatening the survival of many of these small family businesses.

The Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union said many of the subcontractors were unable to pay their own workers, putting the jobs and homes of dozens of local workers at risk.

CFMEU NSW Secretary Andrew Ferguson said the union is committed to ensuring the workers and small businesses who were employed on the site are paid what they are owed.

“The builder’s failure to pay these subcontractors is not only financially devastating for these small family businesses, it may also result in dozens of local working losing their jobs,” he said.

“All they want is a fair days pay for a fair days work, which is why the union is committed to supporting these workers and subbies for as long as it takes to get justice.”
