Union Calls on Federal Labor to Change
GEERS
Bid to boost protection of worker entitlements
The Construction, Forestry, Mining, and Energy Union (CFMEU), the
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, and the National Union of
Workers have begun pressuring Federal Labor to reform the general
employee entitlements and redundancy scheme (GEERS) following a
number of recent company collapses.
The unions are calling for more protection for employees who are
left out of pocket when their employer collapses. CFMEU NSW
secretary, Andrew Ferguson, said there were up to 10 cases of
corporate collapses in the building industry each week where
employees were owed pay and other entitlements. The struggling
automotive industry is also pushing for the changes.
